Commonway Institute is pleased to announce an interactive workshop with Dr. Sharif Abdullah. (For more information on Dr. Sharif, click here.

• Hurricane Katrina demonstrated how deeply local government was underprepared for vulnerable “invisible” communities (race/ethnicity, poverty and others). ARE YOU PREPARED? CAN YOU SEE YOUR “INVISIBLE” COMMUNITIES?

• Hurricane Katrina exposed the weakness and inability of local government agencies to respond to new, changing and difficult circumstances. HOW WILL YOU RESPOND? CAN YOU OPERATE AND COORDINATE EFFORTS AT THE LEVEL REQUIRED?

• Hurricane Katrina revealed how it’s possible that government’s attempts to “help” in a crisis can actually make the crisis much worse. ARE YOU READY TO BE CREATIVE, SUPPORTIVE AND CULTURALLY APPROPRIATE?

• Hurricane Katrina showed the nearly inconceivable chaos of simultaneous mega-crises. In turbulent times, we must be guided by values which go beyond simply meeting infrastructure challenges. WHAT VALUES GUIDE YOUR WORK?

In these chaotic times, local government agencies must be ready and able to “think and act outside the box,” to become part of a global transformation of human society. In this highly interactive workshop, participants will learn about the 12 mega-crises that are affecting nearly every human on our planet – and what these turbulent times require of you.

FORMAT: Sharif Abdullah has worked with local government leaders in a variety of contexts, helping to build more creative, inclusive and resilient organizations. This workshop draws upon his experiences in helping expand awareness and in shaping culture in multi-cultural contexts. In a stimulating blend of lecture, inquiry and small group work, Sharif catalyzes an expanded perception of culture – within the workplace and within the larger community. Interactive exercises will guide participants in viewing local governance in the larger context of an interconnected and interdependent world. (Workshop size will be limited, to assure optimal participation.)

WHO SHOULD ATTEND: Everyone who has a role and a responsibility in meeting our current and future challenges – whether expected or unforeseeable. This workshop will help catalyze important connections ACROSS agencies and departments.
